Between Colombian authors the ongoing literary debate also involves a sensitive issue at the heart of Colombian society; stereotypical reputations and the international attention to Colombia has tended to give the country a reputation of only being a country of violence and drugs. Even though these do exist and are a problem, they are not the only reality in Colombia. In newly developing literature traditions there is an attempt to embrace globalisation re-inventing or romanticising the everyday quality of violence. This has included capturing urban realities and slum violence. In this way the new tradition is a means of bridging first and third worlds – serving a global reading of Colombia, New York, Bombay , London or anywhere. But among authors and scholars there is disagreement as to whether or not this kind of “new style” might only reinforce the stereotypes about Colombia.
